For Faculty

DataHub offers to Bocconi faculty the following resources:
  • Qualified research assistance with a strong background in Economics and coding skills.
  • A set of already available datasets and codes.
Faculty who wants to use the Datahub resources for projects in Economics, Computer Science or Statistics may send us an email at datahub@unibocconi.it with the details and budget of the project and the resources requested.

For Students: Visiting Student Initiative

Students are the very center of the unit, since the DataHub revolves around their open-mind, curiosity, skills and passion. Every academic year the DataHub invites bachelor students and M.Sc. students, who are passionate about computer science, data science, and economics to join the research unit.

Being a visiting student at the DataHub means actively participating in all activities, receive targeted and customized training and contributing actively to the spread of knowledge and competences within the unit also by practically contributing to the GitHub repository of the DataHub.

During the summer
Every year, at the beginning of the summer, visiting students will be trained in specific languages or libraries to then be employed in one or more cutting-edge research projects throughout all the summer. Furthermore, first-year visiting students will be assigned to senior visiting students and receive mentoring throughout their first year in the unit. They will have the opportunity to practically foster the advancement of the project assigned to them by contributing to the coding necessary for the extraction and the analysis of the data. The projects will usually require around 8 weeks of full-time commitment. Details depend on the project, the involved faculty and the specific arrangements of the team.

During the year
In the remaining part of the academic year, coherently with the other academic activities, students will still work, albeit more lightly, on their projects and participate to seminar and reading groups within the unit which object could range from learning new programming languages to new machine learning techniques.
In general, this internal training aspect should be understood as a cooperative process: even though in some occasions external faculty members or instructors will give lectures and train the students, there will be multiple instances in which students will mutually exchange their competences and knowledge. The entire project has to be interpreted as a learning flow in which things are seldom “imposed” and in which knowledge is developed and built in a communal process.

In general, the DataHub is supposed to be an active and creative environment and we encourage students to develop their own ideas to enlarge the knowledge of all members.

Requirements
We aim at selecting passionate and talented students that want to:
  • be engaged in a unique hands-on experience on research lying at the intersection of economics, statistics, and computer science;
  • actively interact with other fellow student and faculty members;
  • contribute to the unit’s activities and stock of codes.
Students from any B.Sc. and M.Sc. in Bocconi are invited to apply, conditional on having robust coding experience.

Application Process
The applications comprise a two-step process. In the first step, students interested should send an email to datahub@unibocconi.it to communicate their interest by February the 3rd.  If there are spots available, they will then receive further instructions containing a very simple timed task on Python that they have to turn in successively with the other documents mentioned below by a given deadline.

The final application must contain:
  1. A small 300-words motivation letter in which you describe your interest in the initiative;
  2. Your CV and your academic transcript;
  3. The .py code of your task and any attached output requested in the task.
All applicants will receive the decision during the following weeks.
